Triathlon brings Father and Daughter together
Disability disappears in competition
By: Tena Lee
"Like so many children with disabilities, five-year-old Mary McAuley was
relegated to the sidelines while her two older brothers scored goals or landed
on base.
Last month, however, the little girl who has been silenced and crippled by
cerebral palsy and epilepsy commanded her own cheering section when she and her
dad Tommy finished their first triathlon together in Lebanon, Tenn.
The two Hendersonville residents plan to compete on their home turf Saturday in
the Old Hickory Lake Triathlon.
The idea to race in a multi-sport event pulling Mary behind in a special-made
trailer came to the 39-year-old Tennessee Air National Guardsman earlier this
year. Over the years he had seen several television specials on a Massachusetts
father-son duo, Dick and Rick Hoyt, who compete together in marathons and
Iron-man competitions."
