Person
encourages students to be true to themselves

"Oakmont Elementary School’s Valarie Person is “The Dickson Herald’s”
Teacher of the Week.
Person has been teaching in Dickson County for 13 years, all at Oakmont. She has
had cerebral palsy her entire life and uses a walker, but she hopes people
realize that while it is part of her life, it doesn’t define who she is.
This desire to alter people’s perceptions of a disability is the reason she
became a speech/language therapist in the public school system.
“Teaching good communication skills to my students is the best way I know how to
change those perceptions,” Person said. “It ensures they (her students) will
always have their own voice in the world.”
