Parent Protest Continues as Plight of Disabled
Children goes on
By: Diana Dundua
"In Georgia there are numerous families bringing up children with cerebral
palsy, these children and their families are in need of serious help. The
government currently provides these families with GEL 55 per month, this is not
enough.
A little while ago, the newly established youth movement Our Generation, staffed
by young Georgians, especially by students, initiated a peaceful protest to help
these disabled children and to raise awareness to people who might be able to
help them. There has not been any response from the government or from other
organizations.
On July 3, three parents bringing up children with cerebral palsy, Nana Lezhava,
Tamuna Labadze and Gogita Murtskhvaladze from Kobuleti (western Georgia)
organized a protest action in front of the American Embassy. They demanded
concrete answers and direct assistance from US Ambassador HE John Tefft.
"The state is essentially forcing us to put our children in orphanages. I do not
think that any normal parent would do this, but our children, who have serious
health and mental problems, could not survive in an orphanage" Murtskhvaladze
told The Messenger on July 3."
