Man with
Cerebral Palsy fights for disabled people's rights
By: Bob
Wilson
"Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and committed to a nursing home at a young
age, a Hartford man has battled to regain his life and freedom.
The fight took him all the way to Washington.
Claude Holcomb is a fighter and has been his entire life. He has Cerebral Palsy
and cannot talk so he communicates with a letter board and spells out words. He
was committed to a nursing home until he was 21, until he fought his way out and
fought to live on his own in an apartment.
"They are always shocked that he doesn't live in a nursing home, that he is out
on his own," says Juliet Meyer.
Holcomb is now fighting for other disabled people, along with his domestic
partner Juliet Meyer.
"We became political allies and then we realized the relationship had changed,"
says Meyer.
They have been together for more than ten years and while they have had a
commitment ceremony and wear wedding rings they can't get married because Claude
will lose his disability funding. That is something else he is fighting to
change.
Claude took a bus to rally Washington D.C. with other people with disabilities
as part of an organization called Adapt. Claude wants people who live in nursing
homes to have the option to live on their own in their own home."
