"BUFFALO,
New York (NY) -- "Disability News and Views," is an exciting online talk show about
living with disabilities, and for the first time bringing critical information
to parents and families of the disabled as well as to those with disabilities
themselves.
Broadcast live every Sunday at 9PM and Wednesday at 7PM ET, the show provides
information to families affected by disabilities on a broad range of topics that
includes legal issues, diagnoses, the search for causes of disabilities, special
education and the whole gamut of treatments, ranging from the traditional to
alternative therapies.
The show’s moderator and developer is Monica Moshenko, a Christian mother of
three children (25 year old twins and 12 year old son with Asperger’s Syndrome)
and director of Power Advocates, agency designed to assist parents of children
with special needs through the special education system.
For seven years, Moshenko has worked with families in Western New York, and
nationally helping them navigate the many bureaucratic hurdles that exist in
order for their children to gain access to the most effective and most
appropriate treatment and education programs available.
"Many parents of
children with disabilities are unaware of their rights under federal and state
laws," Moshenko said. "While parents struggle with a myriad of challenges,
medically, financially and emotionally, they cannot effectively advocate for
their children’s disabilities when they do not know their rights."
"My son Alex was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome when he was six," said
Moshenko. "Because of the early and intensive therapies Alex received in school
and at home, such as speech and occupational therapy and social skills training,
and attends regular class and is very much a typical twelve-year-old. I wanted
to make that difference in the lives of thousands of children with autism and
other disabilities, so I decided to host the show a local radio station." While
Moshenko brokered the time to host the show, she found companies that believe in
her mission across the country and help support some of the expenses of
producing the radio show.
The show is being sponsored by People Inc., Autistic Services, ABC Therapeutics,
Comfort Solutions, and Future Horizons. Past guests on the show include Henry
Winkler, (The Fonz), Teri Garr (movie and TV actress), Dr. Temple Grandin,
Rosemarie Rossetti, Dr. Doris Rapp, Dr. Mel Levin, Rick Lavoie, Al Condeluci,
and many others.
Future topics
include spinal cord injuries, dyslexia, bipolar disorder, non-verbal learning
disorders, special education law, mental retardation, sexuality, epilepsy,
cerebral palsy, ADHD, Alzheimer’s, diet and vitamin interventions, sensory
integration and others. Each week listeners are inspired, educated and
entertained by the guests!
Moshenko’s twelve-year-old son, Alex, hosted a special show geared to kids with
disabilities on December 26 and interviewed Diane Bubel of The Bubel Aiken
Foundation (started by Clay Aiken)!
"Disability News and Views" can be heard live online at
www.disabilitynewsradio.com and
all past shows are available on the website. Moshenko plans to syndicate the
radio show across the country so more people can hear the show on radio stations
and interact with guests and topics each week. The motto of this show is “Our
TALK makes a difference!” Will you? "
