A very special employee: 20-year-old with cerebral palsy an asset to store
By: Eleanor
O'Sullivan
"The fact that Harper suffers from cerebral palsy, which mostly affects the left
side of his body, doesn't enter into the equation on the job. His counselor,
Michael Cestero of the nonprofit Allies Inc. of Hamilton, credits the store's
manager, Rich Byrnes, with seeing Harper's strengths.
"As far as his attitude and ability, Brian is ahead of many of my other kids
with less disabilities," Cestero said. "But it was a long haul to get him this
job. Brian and I tried for a year. Before Rich hired him, there were 120 nos,"
Cestero said.
"His strengths? Customer service. People seem to really like him. I've had
people hunt me down asking for him," said Byrnes.
Byrnes said Harper does what the other employees do — stocking and customer
service — but he doesn't handle money, "only because he says he's not
comfortable doing so," Byrnes said.
Harper beams when he talks about his job."
